Depoe Bay, OR

Sept. 26, 2014
We couldn't check in at Sea Sands RV Park until about 2 so we left Neskowin at 11:30 and went to the Boiler Bay Scenic Viewpoint. The wind was blowing hard on the coast and the sky was partly clear. The surf in Boiler Bay lives up to its name.
Boiler Bay, OR

We got set up in the park in our site very close to the ocean. After lunch we went for a walk along the beach. The wind was blowing very hard from the South so we stopped and went back to our site. Then we drove into Newport for a snack and a sampler of the brews at Rogue Brewing. We stopped at a pizza place on the way back to the park to pick up dinner. The latter part of the day turned out to be sunny with a light wind so we sat out enjoying the beautiful white surf in our "front yard".

We sat out by the fire talking to our neighbors into the evening. It was a great day.

Sept. 27, 2014
After breakfast I went to the beach to hunt for some agates as my Mom did when she and Dad stayed at this park. I found some that we will bring home to add to our supply of agates. Then we went into Depoe Bay to wander through the shops. As in other resort towns most of the stores had relatively the same merchandise so it was quite repetitive. The tide was coming in as we walked along the beach side so some of the waves created a spray that was challenging. We stopped at The Chowder Bowl Cafe and had a good cup of chowder and a salad. We also watched some of the fishing boats come in with catches of bottom fish. Then it was back to the park to enjoy another beautiful day on the coast. In mid afternoon we walked South on the beach and scattered Dad's ashes in the same area we did the same with Mom's ashes 4 years ago. It was wonderful to feel I reunited them at one of their favorite places. Then it was back to camp to relax and socialize with other campers. There was a beautiful sunset this evening.

Sept. 28, 2014
We woke to a perfectly clear sky and virtually no wind today. After breakfast I walked along the beach finding a few more agates. The temperature got into the 70's today making it one of the nicest days we have ever spent on the coast capped by another beautiful sunset.

Sept. 29, 2014
We woke to clouds and the threat of rain for our drive home. We took the more scenic route along the coast through Astoria and North through South Bend and Raymond. It was a long rainy drive to cap off our season of travels for 2014. It's almost time to start making reservations for next year. We are hoping head South in February to Arizona, Palm Springs and other sunny points of interest.

Wilsonville, OR and Neskowin, OR

Sept 22, 2014
Well here we go on our final trip of the year. We arrived in Wilsonville at about 1 so got set up and went out for lunch. Then to Camping World to pick up a couple of things. Then back to the park for the evening. It was not a very nice day but we were able to sit out after dinner for a while.

Sept 23, 2014
After breakfast we went to Aurora, OR to the local museum to see if we have any folks in their available genealogy records. I went to Aurora in the 50's with Gpa and Gma Leever. One name I remembered was Kiel which is the name of the original settler of the town. Also, we found that Gail has relatives from the area. After some hours talking to the curator of the museum we found we need to gather more information before further pursuing the historical issue. We will work on it and go see the curator on our next visit. Then to lunch and back to the park to prepare for our drive to Neskowin, OR in the AM.

Sept 24, 2014
Our drive to Neskowin Creek RV Park was less than 100 miles so we left the park at about 10:30. The park is an open field with three rows on full hook up sites. Nothing spectacular to tell about the place except the bathrooms and facilities are clean and there are a lot of rabbits on the grounds. We drove into Pacific City to have lunch at the Pelikan Pub and Brewery and watched the surf for a bit. It was very windy along the beach. After dinner in the park we sat out around our fireplace for the evening.

Sept 25, 2014
We had breakfast and did a load of laundry before going on a drive to Tillamook. We visited the Blue Heron Cheese Factory and bought a great blue salad dressing and a soup mix. Then we went to  lunch in Netarts at The Schooner Restaurant looking out at the wind and rain in the bay. We drove back to the park via Three Capes Road. This is a pretty drive along the coastline. We had a nice dinner and the wind died down so we sat by the fire for the evening. Tomorrow we drive to the Depoe Bay area, only about 30 miles.

Chelan, WA

September 8, 2014
We had a nice drive of 167 miles in our new truck hauling the Bullet. The new rig gets about 1 mpg better mileage than the old GMC and uses regular gas so is saving us on two accounts. When we got to town we went to lunch at a Mexican restaurant. Then we went to check into Lake Shore RV Park where we usually stay. We have a nice sight with a great view of the lake. Later in the day sister Terry and sister Cheryl and her husband arrived in their motorhomes. It was like a mini family reunion. The weather was nice and warm and cool in the evening.

September 9, 2014
We all got in the truck before lunch to go see Alta Lake State Park where we were in July and were evacuated out because of a wild fire. The devastation driving into the park was awful. About 40 of the homes along the golf course were destroyed by the fire. Very sad. We then drove into the park. Most of the tent sites along the upper side of the road were totally burned. The fire seemed to have jumped around the area randomly burning trees and anything in its way, It was like a moonscape in places. Unearthly. There was even some people camping in the park. We decided we won't be going there for a few years. Gail and I went for a walk into town in the afternoon.

September 10, 2014
Terry needed some brake work on her RV so I followed her to Les Schwab and brought her back to the park. Then we all went to a couple wineries for tasting and then to Lake Chelan Brewing for lunch today. It was a nice and was even nicer when Terry got the call telling her her rig was fixed and it was a minor repair. Then back to the park for the afternoon. Gail and I took another walk into town for some exercise. The wind came up in the afternoon but diminished in evening so we sat out for a bit.

September 11, 2014
Cheryl and John had to leave today so we hung out with then til about lunch. Then Terry, Gail and I went for more wine tasting. At Chelan Ridge Winery we were told about a good artisan pizza joint in Manson. It was closed but we had our minds set on pizza so we went to Westside Pizza. Pretty darn good pie. It was a pretty windy day with even a couple rain showers throughout  the day. It all lessened in the evening so we sat out for a bit.

September 12, 2014
Time to go home today so we were on the road before 9:30 and home by 1. Our final trip of the season starts Sept 22.

Prosser, WA

Sept 5, 2014
Well here we go again on our annual September trip to Wine Country RV Park in Prosser. We arrived at about 1 to wonderful hot weather. I went for a refreshing swim in the pool. My sister Terry arrived later in the day so after she got set up we went to pizza dinner at the new location of one of our favorite places. Then back to the park to enjoy the warm evening.

Sept 6, 2014
After breakfast we were off for some wine tasting and shopping. After lunch we went out again to a local mercantile and other shops. It was another hot, 95 degree day so we tried to stay in air conditioned businesses. Even though it was hot the night temps were in the 40's so we sat around our fire in the evening.

Sept 7, 2014
Midday we were off to a little more wine tasting and lunch at Wine O'Clock Bistro. This is a wonderful place with a great variety of eats. Terry had one of our favorites, a wood fired pear and bacon pizza with white cheddar cheese. We had a new great one. It's called Spinach salad pizza which has bacon, some red pepper flakes and fresh spinach added at the end of the cooking time. Delicious. Tomorrow we are off to Lake Chelan for the week.

Boise, ID

August 17, 2014
We hit the road for Boise this morning at about 9. As we were nearing American Falls we heard a loud pop. I checked the gauges in the truck seeing nothing wrong so pulled over and found we had blown the left rear trailer tire. It was blown wide open with the steel belting outside the tire. This was one of the tires we had to buy in June when we found two of them were worn out. Fortunately the shoulder was very wide so I was able to change the tire relatively safely. We were only about a mile from American Falls where there is a Les Schwab but it was Sunday so they were closed. Tire changed we continued to Boise. We got set up at Hi Valley RV Park on another hot day. We stayed around the park for the day keeping as cool as possible.

August 18, 2014
First thing this morning I took the blown trailer tire to Les Schwab to be repaired. After breakfast we went into Boise to explore the old part of town and the Basque Block. We really like Boise. It's a clean friendly city. The Basque population of Boise is about 15,000, the largest in the US. The Block is an area that was settled by the Basque farmers in the mid 1800's. There are also some pretty interesting eateries in the area. We wandered around town a bit and then back to the park. Later in the day we went to Gail's dear friend Sheryl's home to have dinner with her and her husband Tony and their daughter and her family. We had a really good day.

August 19, 2014
It was another warm day in Boise today. At about noon we went to Sheryl's home to meet up and explore old town Nampa. She drove us into town and we had lunch at Messenger's Pizza. Usually we get a pie and share it and take some home. Messenger's features a slice and sides. The basic pie is probably about 24" round and is cut into six pieces. That and a salad was a big meal. Then we drove around a bit and the ladies went shopping in a make  up store. I wandered around in an electronics store. Then we went back to Sheryl's house for the afternoon and a light french dip and fruit dinner. Afterwards we went back to the park for the evening.

August  20, 2014
We stuck around the park today except for going to wash the truck and do some minor shopping. We took a walk around the park which has over 200 sites. Some are long term campers bit the mix is good and there aren't any old beat up junky rigs like we have seen in some parks. After dinner Sheryl came to visit and see our trailer. She is such a good strong person. Her husband, Tony, has ALS and is bedridden. She gives him hospital quality care all on her own in their home. She left at about 8 and we sat up a bit before going in for the night.

August 21, 2014
We got up and went to Les Schwab to get the repaired tire put on the trailer. After that we drove to Hermiston, OR for the night. We stayed in Pioneer RV Park. It is a nice clean park but the majority of the guests appear to belong term or permanent guests.

August 22, 2014
Up and on the road for the drive home early. We got home at about 1 PM and got unpacked and out the trailer away for a two week stay at home. We traveled over 2200 miles in 20 days. Overall it was a great trip.

Our drive from Helena to Idaho Falls was uneventful. We stayed at Snake River RV Park. This is a nice park with grassy sites and all the amenities. We were able to sit out enjoying the warm weather. We did our laundry and just relaxed. We have about 300 miles to get to Boise.

 August 11, 2014
We drove 300 miles to Helena, MT. When we arrived everybody was at Soup Creek so we got ourselves set up. When they came back to Lakeside I went for a SeaDoo ride with Caitlin, one of the twin 13 year old granddaughters. She really likes to go fast and jump boat wakes. Very fun time. Also at the property were Wade, an EMT who works with Steve and his wife and daughter. Wade is an avid fisherman so he brought a huge cooler full of fresh fish. For dinner they cooked fresh sea bass fish and chips, onion rings, salmon seviche, and dungeness crabs. WHAT???? I think we had more fresh fish in camp than in all the fish markets in Helena. After dinner we had a huge fire and s'mores.

August 12, 2014
When we got up the kids were doing breakfast and invited us to join them. After breakfast they were going back to Soup Creek so Gail and I ventured into Helena to explore the town. We walked through the old town area and visited a variety of shops. Then back to the camp for a nice warm afternoon. When the group returned from Soup Creek they were preparing for dinner. We ate on our own because they were having fresh grilled marinated tuna and we had had enough fish the night before. After dinner we were all out at the fire pit again.

August 13, 2014
After breakfast we gathered Carley and Caitlin to go for a day trip. We headed for the town of Townsend which is a western theme community. We drove from there to White Sulpher Springs where we stayed 7 or 8 years ago. We had a fun lunch at Dora's Cafe. Lots of laughs. Then we took them to the Springdale Colony which is a self sustaining Huderite community. The folks there school their children, make their own clothes, sell products to the public and retail outlets throughout the state. We had gotten produce from them on our previous visit so wanted to do this again. When we drove in the people were watching us from their homes and doorways. One of the ladies sent some some people to help with what we wanted. We got cucumbers, carrots, radishes, dill pickles, and bread. It is all organic and delicious. When we were getting ready to leave two of the young women helping us asked if the girls were twins. They were very curious. The twins really enjoyed the experience. Back at the lake we had dinner of fried walleye, chili ghetti, salad and other goodies with Jeremy and Deanna, friends and next door neighbors at the lake.

August 14, 2014
This morning Jeremy was cooking Huckleberry pancakes and maple sausage. It was a stormy day with wind, some rain and thunder. Everyone stayed in camped and watched movies or played games. When the weather cleared in the afternoon we guys went out for some trout fishing in Jeremy's boat. We caught 2 that weighed over 3 pounds. We got back to camp at about 5 so it was time for dinner and some time outside.

August 15, 2014
Up in the morning to have a light breakfast. The weather was still a little storm at times so we stayed close to camp sitting under the awning if needed. Between squalls we all played some horseshoes. For dinner we went to the Lakeside Bar then back to Jeremy's house to watch the Seahawks game.

August 16, 2014
We were up early to get packed up for a drive of about 250 miles to Idaho Falls.

Packwood, WA

August 6, 2014
We had our short drive to Cascade Peaks near Packwood this morning. After setting up the site we walked around the park to see what has changed since last year. The new owners have done some cosmetic updates to some of the facilities. After lunch Hart and Amy Hughes and their kids arrived. We have camped with them at Peaks the past few years at this time of year. Hart is a long time friend of Tracy and our family. A couple hours later Tracy and her girls arrived. The gathering is almost complete. After everyone was set up we went to their site and enjoyed the evening fire. It was a beautiful sunny day at Cascade Peaks

August 7, 2014
I went to pick up Hart this morning and we went fishing at Skate Creek. No luck so it was back to camp. The adults at their camp took the kids swimming in the pools at the park in the afternoon. The owner of the Packwood Outdoors Store suggested we try fishing Packwood Lake. He told us it is a 6 mile drive south of town on a paved road so Gail and I went to check it out. It was a winding road to a parking lot where the sign indicated it is a 4.5 mile hike to the lake. Needless to say we didn't take the hike nor will I go later with the men of the camp. Later we joined the others at their site for the evening fire.

August 8, 2014
I planned to go fishing with all that were interested but when I went to their site at about 9 most of them, even the kids, had just gotten up and were more interested in breakfast and swimming in the pool or going to play along the Cowlitz River so Hart and I headed to Skate Creek to give it a try. We fished a couple locations using various baits and lures with no luck so back to camp stopping for groceries and ice on the way. At the evening fire I asked who wanted to go fishing in the morning. Sydney, our almost 16 year old granddaughter said she did.

I was at the kids' campsite at 7:30 AM to go fishing with Sydney. She was ready to go so I gave her the keys to the truck and she drove to Skate Creek. We tried fishing at several locations catching 2 small trout each at one site. I had a wonderful time with Syd on this outing. She is a sweet teenager with a lot going for her. Then back to the park for breakfast. Later Gail and I went for a walk around the park. The others went to the river for the day. Too much sun and heat for us and no place to hide from it on the river. They had inner tubes and other toys so they floated a small side stream and the main river. We saw them doing this and it looked like a lot of fun but the river is glacier fed so too chilly for me.

August 10, 2014
We got up and broke camp to head for Post Falls, ID as an interim stop on out journey to Helena, MT. After saying good bye to all we hit the road at about 9 AM. The Couer de Alene RV Resort is very nice in Post Falls. We went out to dinner a a local pub called Capone's. They have a great selection of craft beers and terrific food. Then back to the park to enjoy the massive orange full moon.

Mayfield Lake

August 3, 2014
We drove to Mayfield Lake Park, about 100 miles for a three day stay. The park is part of the Tacoma Power parks system with reservations available through the state parks on line site. Our daughter Tracy and family had been here before and told us it is a nice park. Our site was right in the lake about 20 feet from the water. We arrived on Sunday at about 3 so the lake was very busy with water craft and swimmers. The weather was very nice and cooled in the evening so sleeping was comfortable. The park was full all three days we stayed.

August 4, 2014
Another warm day with a nice wind to make it quite comfortable. No need to go anywhere except for ice so we sat out and read most of the day. What a great way to spend the day. We sat out until about 11 then inside to rest up for another day by the lake.

August 5, 2014
Today was nice and sunny but a wind blew most of the day. It was just windy enough to be cooling but pretty annoying. In the evening it was even chilly so I got our fireplace out for the first time since early June. Tomorrow it’s off to Cascade Peaks near Packwood for our annual gathering of some of the clan and extended family. A drive of about 45 miles.

Ellensburg

July 21, 2014
Just a nice 75 mile drive to Ellensburg and Yakima River RV Park. This park is a working ranch as well as a rustic RV park. I say rustic because there is no shower and public bathroom. How's that for picky? Anyway there are horses and Brahma bulls in the fields adjacent to the campground.

Last night we saw a fox crossing the fields. When we got set up we went into Ellensburg for a fantastic lunch at the Palace Saloon and Cafe which has been in business since 1892. Then we asked and found a good pizza place for a coming meal. Back at camp I went fly fishing in the Yakima River getting a few bites but no catching. The river is barbless hooks and catch and release. We had a chicken dinner and sat out enjoyed the cooler evening and sunset.

July 22, 2014
There was some rain last night which was pretty refreshing. After breakfast we went into Ellensburg to check out the shops. Gail had never been here and I haven't foe many years. There are some quaint shops and restaurants in the old part of the town. We happened upon a shop that is closing Saturday so was clearing out the inventory with 50% to 70% off. We found a few things that we didn't know we couldn't live without. Then we went to lunch at The Cornerstone Pie, a highly recommended pizza place. We had some pizza and beer and got another pizza for later. Yup, it was good. Then back to the park to go fishing and enjoy the evening

Wenatchee

July 8, 2014
We were up and on the road before 9:30 heading to Wenatchee River County Park. We’ve stayed here a few times in the past. It’s a nice park right on the Wenatchee River. IT WAS HOT! I mean 103 degrees. After we got set up we went into Wenatchee to visit PYBUS Public Market. We don’t know what the name stands for but it’s a nice market that’s been open about a year with 20 year around vendors including fruit and veggie stands, restaurants, a cheese monger and other nice stands. We bought a Walla Walla sweet onion, a real good cheese and a packet of charring spices for cooking meats. After a real good salmon dinner we sat out until about 10 enjoying the cooling evening. It got down to about 70 overnight

July 9, 2014
Not as hot today but still in the low 100's. After breakfast we went into Leavenworth to cruise the shops and enjoy the ambiance of the community. We had a nice lunch and back to the RV park. It was  a"take  it easy" day.

Winthrop

July 10, 2014
After breakfast we drove to Winthrop, about 98 miles, and the Silverline RV Park just outside of town. This is a nice RV park right on Pearrygin Lake. Just up the road is Pearrygin Lake State Park where our daughter Tracy and her family were camping. After getting set up we went and visited them for a while. The town of Winthrop is very quaint with an old west motif. Of course the stores are geared for tourists so we fit in well. The temperature got up to the high 90's but the lake was very inviting for cooling off. The kids came over for a swim in the afternoon.I went fishing after dinner but no keepers.

July 11, 2014
Another scorcher today. We went into town again just to wander around and maybe find a hat to shield my face from the sun. The town was really getting busy with tourists for the weekend. Then back to the park for the rest of the day. I went fishing again after dinner and caught a nice 10" trout. We met some nice folks parked next to us that are from Marysville. They suggested that if we like the park we should make reservations for next year which we did. There was a beautiful full moon that had a slight yellow tinge to it caused by wild fires to the south .

July 12, 2014
And yet another HOT day. I woke at about 6 to rain but by 7:30 there was not a trace of it, The kids came over after going on a float down the Methow River. I cooked up the trout for them. Then we went to Don and Deanna Ahlers, our son in law's friend from Alaska, home for dinner. Don smoked up a big brisket that was delicious. We went back to camp at about 8 and sat out trying to stay cool.

July 13, 2014
Today we went into town again looking for a nice place for dinner Monday night. Most places in town serve pub fare or Mexican food. We drove to Sun Mountain Lodge to check their restaurants out. Very nice but also spendy. The lodge is about 10 miles out of town on top of Sun Mountain. The views are spectacular. You can see the Cascades and all of the Methow Valley. During the afternoon there was some lightning that started a small fire in the hills across the lake from us. It looked like it was under control a couple hours later. Then a light dinner and fishing. I caught 3 trout from 9-12 inches.

July 14, 2014
I went fishing again this morning to add to my catch but no luck. After breakfast we went into Twisp to do laundry and check out the town. Twisp is a nice town but doesn't have the tourist appeal that Winthrop does. Then back to our RV park. While driving through Winthrop we saw my sister Terry. We new she was coming but weren't sure when. We made plans to have dinner with her. We went to lunch at the Old Schoolhouse Brew Pub. We shared a terrific Beer cheese BLT. Then back to the park to enjoy the beautiful day. We had a nice dinner with Terry and talked about plans for Alta Lake State Park, our destination tomorrow.

Alta Lake State Park

July 15, 2014
It was a 42 mile drive from Winthrop to Alta Lake State Park. On our journey just south of the town of Carlton we saw a small fire in the trees that was started by recent lightning. Our daughter, Stephanie, and her kids and Tracy's daughter Sydney were there. It was hot again but the lake was cooling. We noticed some smoke from local fires. We had Steph and the kids over for dinner and had a nice evening outside.

July 16, 2014
I made plans to take the kids fishing this morning so we were off to try our luck at 7 AM. No luck so back to camp for breakfast. It was a lazy hot day with swimming and sitting around on the docket. For dinner we had Steph and the kids to our site where she fixed tacos. My sister and her son and his wife and daughter joined in with a big taco salad. It was a fun dinner like we used to have when my folks would camp here. Then a nice evening with family.

July 17, 2014
I was up at about 8 and was invited to breakfast at Steph's campsite. It was hot again and the smoke was getting worse. We had a nice day visiting with campers and taking it easy. We had planned a ceremony to scatter Dad's ashes that evening at 5 so we all gathered and shared stories about Mom and Dad at the lake. Sister Cheryl and I took a fast run around the lake in her boat to commemorate Dad's love for the place. It was a wonderful touching event. Then all went to their sites for dinner. Terry, her son and daughter in law, were very concerned about the smoke that seemed to be getting worse in a hurry so went toward Pateros to see what was up. When they returned they said, "Pateros is burning!" They went around telling the other campers of the danger. We decided it was time to get out. Other campers had gone to see what was happening and came back assuring it was a bad situation. The fact that the road into the lake is the ONLY way in and out was quite a factor in our decision as well. Everyone was packing up and is was an orderly evacuation. By then it was about 7 and was as dark as midnight. Here are some pics I took on our way out of the park. What appears to be snow or rain in the lighter pictures was in fact ash and cinders.

Within a few hours of us evacuating the fire had jumped the Methow River and run up the road along the golf course destroying houses and the camp ground.
I must add that we were not notified by any rangers or staff of the impending evacuation. We didn't see any of them after about 3 in the afternoon. This is very disturbing and many of us are going to write letters expressing our disgust.
We drove until about midnight looking for a place to stay and ended up in a rest stop on I-90 near Vantage.

July 18, 2014
We got up at about 8 to the noise of trucks leaving and traffic on I-90. I called a familiar RV park near Moses Lake and they had a place for us to stay for 3 days.when we will go to our next stop. Our Park is O'Sullivan Sportsman Resort near the Pot Holes reservoir.During our stay here until July 21 we are just taking it easy enjoying the weather and amenities.

Mt St Helens

June 30, 2014
We drove to Seaquest State Park to serve as a base for visiting Mt St Helens. We drove into Castle Rock to check it out and do some shopping. Then back to camp in the woods.Tomorrow we spend the day exploring Mt St Helens.

July 1, 2014
After breakfast we drove the 50 miles to the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The facility is very nice with several presentations on the history and eruption of Mt St Helens. In the crater you can see steam escaping from the earth.

There are still some trees in the area that show the power of the eruption. Others were cut down because they were so damaged by it.

One area just below the crater is called the pumice zone because of the amount of pumice left from the event. Days after the eruption elk were walking on the crusted pumice. Their hooves broke through in places which allowed rain to sit in the marks and promote vegetative growth. Scientists have found there are 26 different plants growing in the pumice zone because of the elks' digestive debris.
There are many hikes you can take to various areas of the monument. We did a little self tour and saw all we needed to see. Overall an awesome site.

Wilsonville, OR

June 27, 2014
The drive from Medford was long. There was a multiple car accident that had traffic tied up for probably 3 miles. It took us over half an hour to get through it. Six hours to go 260 miles. We stay at  Pheasant Ridge RV Park when we come to Wilsonville. It's a very nice park. When we got here we got set up and rested from the travel. Oh what a life.

June 28, 2014
It was a grey day with showers today. We went for a drive to Tualatin and Sherwood. Tualatin is a thriving community of over 18,000 with lots of new businesses and still growing. Sherwood is much smaller and has an old town that is real interesting. It was raining so we just drove through. Then back to Wilsonville and lunch at McMinamin's. Then back to camp for the evening.

June 29, 2014
We slept in til about 8:30 and fixed a great breakfast before setting out on errands and sight seeing. We visited the town of Aurora which was settled in the 1850's by a religious group. Some of the original settlers are from Grandma Leever's family. I asked around about them and one shopkeeper knew one of the my great uncles I used to visit in the 1950's with my grand parents. There are some very nice antique shops in Aurora. Gail found a glass dish she needed to finish a set we got as a wedding gift so we bought it. On the way out of town we stopped at the Community Cemetery where I found headstones of some of the kin. Made me feel good. Then stop at Camping World to pick up a couple things I need for the trailer. Back to camp for the rest of the day and get ready to travel tomorrow.

Medford, OR

June 24, 2014
It was only about 40 miles driving today. After getting set up we drove into Medford to shop at Costco, Fred Meyer and MacDonalds. Back at the park I walked to the fishing pond to check it out and went to the pool for a swim. Then a nice flank steak dinner followed by enjoying the evening outside.

June 25, 2014
After breakfast we drove to the town of Jacksonville. This is a quaint town with a lot of western history. To get there we drove the Old Stage Road. We walked through town checking out the businesses. Lots of "antique" stores, a couple bars and some restaurants. Nice community. Then back to the park for the afternoon. I went fishing in the pond which is catch and release and barbless hooks. I caught a few perch and blue gill. Nothing spectacular.

June 26, 2014
It rained during the night but was a pretty nice day. We went into Medford for lunch and then back to the park. I went fishing again and caught more of the same. We just took it easy today as we have about a 260 mile drive tomorrow to Wilsonville, OR

Crater Lake

June 20, 2014
It was just a 110 mile drive through some picturesque forest land to Prospect, OR where we are staying at Crater Lake RV Park. This is a nice park in a setting in the trees. Our site has a good yard that gets plenty of sun. After setting up and lunch we took a hike in the woods to a back water of a dam on the North Rogue River. The water is very clear and I was told fishing is pretty good. Then we walked down stream to see if we could get down to the river. I was able to go down a pretty steep slope to get a look at it. Very pretty. Then back to the site and sit around and relax. Tomorrow off to Crater Lake and other sites.

June 21, 2014
After breakfast we drove to Crater Lake. WOW!! Amazing! Being Saturday it was busy at the rim but none the less beautiful. It's nice to have a senior National Parks Pass. We were able to get through the line at the entrance to the park with a minimal delay.
The lodge at Rim Park is stunning. They have done several renovations since it was built in 1915 but maintained the beauty of the great hall's massive fireplace and other details.
Walking along the paths on the crater rim is awesome. The lake was formed 7700 years ago by the eruption of Mt Mazama. The color of the water in the lake is the bluest we have ever seen. It is the clearest lake in the world. You can see at 144 ft deep. The lake is 1942 ft deep at its deepest point. It was so still I took a picture of Wizard Island which can be viewed upside down and still look upright.

Because of the snowfall, average 10 feet per year, trees have adapted themselves to withstand the weight and cold.

There was still about 5 feet of snow in places alongside the road. On some areas of the lake there is still a film of ice. The temperature of the lake ranges from 32 to 60 degrees. At 230 feet deep the temp stays at 38 degrees. This is a spectacular place to visit.
From Crater lake we drove to viewpoint of Diamond Lake. This lake was also formed by volcanic activity but is not deep, only 60 to 85 feet. With the streams washing silt into the lake it will eventually be filled and not have water.

Nearby is Mt Thielson, elevation 9100 ft. This is another volcano from the days of Mt Mazama. The pointed top is referred to as a plug which acts as a plug so it won't erupt again out of the top.

Then it was off to find Toketee Falls as was suggested by one of our camp hosts. We thought we found the trail head so hiked on for about 1/4 mile. Nope, it was the Clearwater River trail, so back to the truck we went. A few miles more driving we found the Toketee trail head. The trail is 1/2 mile long with 97 steps/stairs going up and 125 going down. That's 444 stairs in the round trip It was an interesting hike with beautiful results when we came to the falls. Then back to the truck to drive back to camp. It was almost 5 so we got dinner ready and enjoyed the evening.

Today we stayed pretty close to the RV park exploring the sites around Prospect. We first hiked to Piersony Falls. The falls are in deep woods where the creek splits and comes down about a 20 foot pair of falls.

Then we hiked to the avenue of Giant Boulders. These massive rocks were blown about 35 miles from the
eruption of  Mt Wallowa which created Crater Lake. The pictures don't really show the size of the boulders. Some are as big as a full size pickup truck.

Then we drove to a trail head leading to Mill Creek and Barr Creek Falls. Two more beautiful viewpoints in the area.

One more day exploring the upper Rogue River.Today we hiked the Rogue Gorge viewpoint. The Rogue River pours through this cut in the lava at a rate of 441,000 gallons per minute. At one point it is about 30 feet wide and narrows to about 3 feet. The power of the water is amazing. Thousands of years ago the river ran about 650 feet deep through the earth. Then with volcanic events the river bed was filled with lava so the water has been cutting through to create a new bed.

Then we went down stream to see the natural bridge. This attraction is where the river found a lava tube that runs through the lava bed along the its path. The water enters the entrance of the tube and bores through to come out 200 feet downstream. Still another awesome feature of nature.
